Staying in a hotel has changed drastically over the years. The hotel stay, like everything else, has become much more casual both in the nature of the accommodations and our approach to the stay. The first thing is to decide where you wish to stay, how long you will stay, and how much you wish to spend. You may be a person who always stays at the most expensive inns or hotels, or you may be bargain hunting. One of the fastest growing accommodations in this country is the bed & breakfast or simply the B & B. This type of inn has been available in Europe and other countries for years and can be very quaint, comfortable, and charming. In some countries they are closely regulated so you can usually be assured of a clean room and a decent meal. The grand hotels still exist, and for those, you must be on your best behavior.
Making reservations is both necessary and very simple. If you are accustomed to using a travel agency or a booking agent, find one with whom you are comfortable and tell the agent what your requirements are for a hotel. You must again tell him or her exactly what you wish – don’t assume he or she will be able to guess or will fill in the banks. Also, be very honest about how much you wish to pay. That will make it easier, you will be more pleased with the room, and this agent will be able to serve you for years to come.
The Internet is the newest source of information and sometimes, you can even look at the very room you will occupy and make a reservation. This is now even true with B & B accommodations. Before going to anywhere you can take necessary information about that place regarding its map, route, place or sceneries. This information is easily available on internet. You just need to spend some time on searching good place to make your stay satisfactory and memorable.
The etiquette of making a reservation is the same as calling a good friend you wish to visit and informing them of your plans. You can simply drop into most hotels and inns and hope for the best, however, it is much better for both parties if a reservation is requested in advance. It eliminates confusion and disappointment.
You may also use a telephone or a fax machine to make reservations in most places. Remember, even when making a reservation on the Internet, over the telephone or in a letter or fax, it is important to be polite and cooperative. You may come across with rude and demanding people who though themselves very important, end up with some horrid accommodations by being rude to an unknown reservation clerk or bellman. If you wish to be arrogant and self-important, look out; people to whom you are condescending and abrupt have some very creative ways of getting even.
