Whatever your career goals, body language will help you succeed in them. As well as assessing your qualification, experience and performance, people will often unconsciously be judging you on other factors-whether you appear non verbally confident, competent and efficient. Therefore remember the following points  when you are at your workplace:

  1. what you wear at work makes an individual statement about you. So it’s wise to think about your agenda and choose your clothes accordingly and for women that included your accessories, makeup and hairstyle as well. It is important for you to be seen as having power, authority, confidence and the right attitude in relevance to the task at hand and this is where your dress code comes in. When you are at work make sure you(both men and women) adopt the non verbal icons of masculinity. For  women the key lies in shape and colour, picking up slightly tailored look that is abit similar to a man’s suit, using dark and toned down shades, very light makeup and a simple hairstyle. However if you job demands a more one to one interaction with your client and is more focused on creating cooperative and rapportful relationship at work then women can choose clothes that reflect more feminine emblem such as lighter, brighter colours, patterned rather than plain materials and unstructured shapes that signal relaxation. BUT remember not to slide over the boundary between femininity and sexuality.
  2. Know the shade card and the style statement that it makes.forexample, black says “expertise and intellectualism” and is generally associated to the church and the law, while  white says wisdom and compassion is associated with medicine, grey depicts professionalism and is associated with corporate/management sector ,etc.
  3. No one should be sexually harassed, especially at work. But if it does happen, then you can use your body language to give a very strong signal to the culprit. It is least effective in such situations to shrink way and smile placatingly as it is likely to discourage further advances. Use you body language by facing him and staring at him directly, unsmilingly, while verbally making it clear that you don’t want any further advances.
  4. Master the art of handling your boss. Remember  everyone is gifted with  body language ,its just that some people know very well how to put this gift to work while others have to put some energy discovering and polishing it…..IF your boss is that “autocratic type”(values non verbal signs of status like the desk, his name plate, the company car, dresses up expensively and formally, etc)then he will try to keep barriers between you and himself by making sure he has an expressionless face and an emotionless voice so that you don’t get too friendly. If you want to be his /her good employee never try to undermine his formal body language, treat him formally, knocking the door when you enter his room, waiting to be told to sit down, not moving to his side of the desk without permission, don’t interrupt him, smile and be pleasant BUT don’t laugh or cat try to chat more than he does or he will see you as time waster. And if your autocratic boss is a women don’t try to out dress her. If your boss is a “democratic type” (mostly female bosses have this style) then what’s important to her is the people side of the job, so she’ll use body language to build relationships. To be successful with this kind of boss you need to tread a careful line. Go with her open door policy, match her rapport with friendly non verbal signals of your own But don’t think she wants you to act as a peer and start interrupting and talking over her. Instead you act in a friendly manner but still wait for her lead in speaking and acting. And if your boss is a “laissez-faire type” then he is the  type who keeps clear, letting you do you job in your own way. He might be an introvert who has got promotion through talent rather than through people skills. So he may set up barriers. So if you want to be in his good books  your body language should emphasize self sufficiency, show  non verbal signs of motivation so that he knows that you will get the job done, but don’t expect high levels of interaction; keep meetings short, sit at an angle from him so he doesn’t feel invaded ,etc.
