Whats In The Name….Quite Abit

I really don’t agree when some people say what’s in a name……if we closely look around us we see something entirely opposite of this…..everything is in the name, almost quite often. What are Gucci, prada, Valentino, BCBG, Dior, etc?? They are all big names and we pay hundreds of dollars to buy them. But they are not mere names, they stand for quality, luxury, exquisiteness, fashion, style ,etc.and their names have billion of dollars worth brand value! So when you are in a fix to decide about what to name you business be sure that you do not choose a name in haste because you can really make your business sell if it has a a good catchy name i.e. something that compliments what product, services, etc you are offering with it!

The question is how to start with the brainstorming for this name selection process:

  • First understand what your business stands for i.e. what are your distinguishing features, in what kind of market will you be launching your business, who will your competitors be, what kind of  market grabbing features are you providing through your product, service or experience ,etc
  • Second, understand that you have to go step by step in this process…..once you have understood what your business stands for and what you want to offer your customers, start thinking of names that fit in with your business….a great way to do this is by referring to the thesaurus on and off. look up adjectives, verbs, nouns that go with the idea of your company.
  • Third, if you cant find the thesaurus handy then try some names from some specialized field say for example if you are in the business of construction try some name from the field of engineering, if you are an owner of an art gallery take-up some ideas from English literature books that you might have read ,etc
  • Fourth, if you are still unsuccessful in the name task don’t dread…..brainstorm over some mythological names found in ancient history etc. Most mythological figures are known for something specific, so try choosing a particular characteristic that embodies the image you want to portray for your business and search for a mythological figure that represents that characteristic.
  • Fifth, if you don’t want a one word name for your business you could ,depending on your business ,choose a phrase that embodies the distinguishing traits of your business.
  • Last but not least, if you want something really exotic for the business, then don’t be scared to venture into foreign languages and choose something from their. We see nowadays thata number of local businesses are taking up names from German, Italian and French language, as they seem to be most widely spoken and understood after English.
